Background of the Study

Digital infrastructure, particularly broadband connectivity, is increasingly recognized as a catalyst for economic productivity in the modern global economy. In Nigeria, the expansion of broadband services in Abuja has revolutionized communication, business operations, and service delivery. The integration of digital technologies into economic activities has led to increased efficiency, innovation, and competitiveness across various sectors (Chukwu, 2023). Broadband expansion facilitates access to information, supports e-commerce, and enhances the capabilities of both public and private enterprises. Despite these advantages, challenges such as network reliability, high costs, and limited rural penetration persist, which can hamper the full potential of digital transformation (Okoro, 2024). Recent evidence suggests that investments in digital infrastructure are closely linked to improvements in economic productivity, particularly in urban centers where digital adoption rates are high (Uche, 2025). As Abuja continues to invest in broadband expansion, it serves as a critical case study for understanding how digital infrastructure influences economic outcomes. This study appraises the impact of broadband expansion on economic productivity, examining the extent to which digital connectivity drives growth, enhances business operations, and contributes to the overall competitiveness of the Nigerian economy.

Statement of the Problem

Despite significant investments in broadband infrastructure, Nigeria continues to face challenges in fully harnessing the benefits of digital connectivity for economic productivity. In Abuja, issues such as intermittent network service, high subscription costs, and unequal access remain persistent obstacles (Chukwu, 2023). These challenges inhibit businesses from leveraging digital technologies to enhance productivity and competitiveness (Okoro, 2024). Consequently, the anticipated economic benefits of broadband expansion are not being fully realized. This study seeks to investigate the factors that limit the effectiveness of digital infrastructure investments in driving economic productivity in Abuja and to propose strategies for overcoming these barriers (Uche, 2025).

Objectives of the Study

1. To evaluate the impact of broadband expansion on economic productivity in Abuja.

2. To identify the challenges limiting the effectiveness of digital infrastructure.

3. To recommend strategies for enhancing digital connectivity and economic performance.

Research Questions

1. How does broadband expansion influence economic productivity in Abuja?

2. What are the main challenges associated with digital infrastructure development?

3. What measures can be implemented to optimize the economic benefits of broadband expansion?

Research Hypotheses

1. Broadband expansion significantly enhances economic productivity.

2. Network reliability and high costs are major barriers to digital infrastructure effectiveness.

3. Policy interventions aimed at reducing digital divide can boost economic performance.

Significance of the Study (100 words)

This study is significant as it provides a comprehensive analysis of the impact of digital infrastructure, specifically broadband expansion, on economic productivity in Abuja. The findings offer valuable insights for policymakers, technology providers, and business leaders to optimize digital investments. By identifying key challenges and proposing actionable strategies, the research supports the creation of a more robust digital ecosystem that drives economic growth and innovation. This contribution is critical for formulating policies that enhance digital connectivity and promote sustainable economic development.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study is limited to evaluating the impact of digital infrastructure, specifically broadband expansion, on economic productivity in Abuja. It focuses on the effects within the digital sector and does not extend to other forms of technological investments.

Definitions of Terms
